Feeling Dry…Exfoliate made in 2 mins

Around this time of year, wherever you are, your skin might be feeling a bit dry.

Some causes: Sun, Wind, Cold, Artificial & Natural Heat, Stress, not enough water consumption, low humidity, hot showers…The list goes on

I’ve found my skin in the last few weeks dry.  It’s summer here in Australia and between the sun screen, ocean, air, water, dry air, etc… moisturizer doesn’t always cut it- I need a little exfoliation and deep hydration.

Its soooooooooooo easy to make a quick sugar scrub, even minutes before you take a shower or bath. I find myself thinking, why don’t I do this more often???

Give yourself a quick treat for the shower or bath tonight!

 SUGAR SCRUB TONIGHT:

Bowl

1 cup of Sugar(white or brown)

Coconut oil, grape seed oil, olive oil(I prefer the first two)

Scent: Essential oils are great: Lavendar, peppermint, tea tree, eucalyptus, citrus

OR

Find something in your cupboard or frig or garden: Green Tea, Chamomile, Coffee grinds, cinnamon, ginger, lemon, vanilla extract, banana, strawberry, blueberry, mint, sage, fresh herbs, orange

Place sugar in a small bowl and add enough oil to coat while stirring- add scent- Consider if you want an uplifting scent like Peppermint or Coffee or Citrus or a calming scent like lavender or Chamomile or Tea Tree.

AND THATS IT!  Mix and enjoy- exfoliate your arms and legs, in-between your toes and fingers, shoulders, etc…

Rinse when done and towel dry.  Your skin will feel smooth and moisturized.  Try to do this once a week, change the combination of scents.

My favorite combos:

Chai Tea: I add 1 bag of English tea loose, ginger powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, and a little vanilla for a uplifting warm morning scrub.

&

Theres nothing like good old beautiful Lavender and sage together to relax at night with.

Don’t waste money on buying a silly nappy bag! Get something special!

I found myself in the baby isle of Target the other day talking a mom to be out of buying a nappy/diaper bag!  I know it really wasn’t my business and I really have no idea why I even opened my mouth, except I feel that you pay WAY too much on an ugly nappy/diaper bag, when all a nappy/diaper bag is, is a bag with pockets and different compartments!

Well equestrian mothers to be- Take my advice:

Buy are super beautiful bag that will last way past nappy/diaper years!

Really what you need is a great bag that has a few compartments and in addition to that- a clutch purse or cross body bag for your own items and  an envelope bag or two for baby goods and other things.

If you’re going to spend money on a diaper bag- you might as well get something that fits your style(cause face it, mid price nappy/diaper bags are UGLY and pretty ones are super $$$).   Find something that will grow with your needs from infant to toddler and beyond!

Large equestrian bags the suit these needs: Check out Oughton Limited, Baker Blankets, Rebecca Ray Designs, Sheplers and Etsy.

Endless options

Consider a Clutch bag or a cross body bag that fits your basic needs of -Wallet, Cell phone, some other little items that you can remove quickly if needed is a great idea.  Or get a cross body bag.

And a cosmetic bag or an envelope bag for baby needs for nap pies, wipes, sunscreen, nipple cream, etc..

Consider also packing a small cosmetic type bag that has quick fixes:  Eyes, Lips, Scents, hair!  I really enjoy sweet scents from Lush. Their body powder is a great quick option for deodorant on the go, etc…

A spare change of clothes for baby can be placed in a separate bag and left to live in the car. This can be easily grabbed if you think you might

Put all your essentials in a large bag that you will still have some room for extras, like a small blanket, a book, or other items!

Australian Year Round Essentials- Don’t leave home without them

As we head into the cooler months, some of us feel that we’re safe on cooler and cloudy days not to wear a hat or sunscreen.  Don’t be fooled- make sure you have these essentials within reach at all times.

Need an update?  Hat, Sunnies, Sunscreen has seen better days?  Go for a new look!

Australian Essentials

When traveling or living  in Australia here are your essentials:

Sunglasses or as they say in Australia: Sunnies

You can choose any style that you like.  Make sure you like your sunglasses and they give you a little bit of confidence.  If you’re not sure about the style, either bring a friend to try some on that you value their opinion or ask someone in the store that looks stylish.  Sometimes a stranger will suggest to you a great new style!

I’d suggest that you don’t buy super cheap ones as eye protection from the sun is very important, especially in Australia.

One suggestion is to check out Gidgee-Eyes for Equestrians.  They have four main styles to choose from, several color options, but most importantly they have been designed for the equestrian.  They are light, fit very well, fit under your helmet, have excellent UV protection, technical material for durability and have been tested and loved by many top competitors in all sorts of weather conditions and terrain.

What’s also nice is they come with a nice hard case, a soft case, and two lenses to interchange depending on light.

I’m digging the Enduro and Liberty Styles that Gidgee Eyes have to offer:

***Even when its a rainy day in Australia, don’t’ be caught without your sunnies.  The sun always comes out and you will need them!  Don’t’ leave home without them!

Another essential is footwear when you’re not riding: Thongs  or Pluggers (Flip flops)

SAVE OPTION: A favorite Australian brand of thongs is Havaianas- They pretty much come in any color or pattern imaginable!

Things to possibly consider- Do you want to add a pop of color with your footwear?  Or do you want your footwear to compliment colors you wear?

Decisions Decisions…. They are comfortable but are a regular pair of thongs that will last you, depending on your wear and tear, a year or two.

SPLURGE OPTION: If you are looking for a pair of Equestrian inspired sandals or thongs that will last you a life time and will look great with anything you wear, my suggestion is that you check out the amazing creations of Katharine Page!   My heart skips a beat when I think about her shoes!

I just love the equestrian tack inspired stitching found on all her items.

There are endless choices when it comes to non riding light footwear- just make sure you have at least one pair of thongs!

Last but not least, a hat is essential:

Your Australian classic hat of choice is an Akubra hat!  Its an Australian icon that has been producing  felt hats for over 130 years!  There are hundreds of styles to choose from, an equestrian classic is the Arena style.

Click picture to be directed to Akubra Hats

They also provide 70SPF sun protection!  Make sure you shape the hat a little or it will just look like you bought it- you gotta break them in a little.

Other equestrian choices- almost all equestrian clothing manufacture produces a fun cap to wear- Come colorful choices come from Ariat or Wrangler.

Don’t forget to also pack your sunscreen, have some clothing layers handy for sun protection, to change into after riding, and to add when the sea breeze comes in and cools things down quickly in the afternoon, depending on where you are.

STAY TUNED: More Australian essentials coming soon!

November’s DIY Project- Peppermint Sugar Scrub

The perfect gift for all Equestrians!  November’s DIY Project- Peppermint Sugar Scrub.  After a long cold windy day at the barn, there’s nothing better to exfoliate and hydrate with this! Makes great holiday gifts.

Supplies you need:  Peppermints, Sugar-you can use a variety of kinds if you choose, Olive Oil, & Peppermint Oil.  I also added Grapeseed Oil. Grapeseed Oil is a great antioxidant & will aid in skin damage.

Mix the sugars, crushed peppermints, and add the oils.  Pour to the consistency that you prefer.  The Peppermint Oil is quite strong so add a little bit at a time.

If you choose, you can be clever with layers of peppermints or put a whole peppermint on the bottom or top as a surprise.  Have fun with it.

Have fun decorating the jars. I made these cute labels up.

I was recommended to try Herban Essentials by an Equestrianista who’s very savvy.  I wrote to Herban Essentials and they sent me a little sample pack to give them a try.

My first observations:

The packaging is clean, simple and clever.  Very eye catching and something that you’re happy to throw in your bag, keep in the barn, in your car and nearby to use when needed.

I always like to support good companies that use pure good quality product, are animal testing free, and manufacture within their own country.

I received a multi pack- I couldn’t decide which wipe to open first!  After trying all scents, I don’t have a favorite, they are all great.  Personally, I love mint- so the mint wipes were great and refreshing.  The lemon and orange were deliciously clean. The lavender was delightfully calming and lovely.

They make a clever pet wipe with the scent of lavender.  What a great idea!  Those stinky barn dogs could use a wipe down once in a while.  Plus, the lavender scent has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties and has been used as a repellent for insects which is a nice added benefit.

Many of the essential oils not only smell good, but have other properties such as anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and aroma therapy.
I thought a lot about how you can use these wipes with the Equestrian in mind:

- Wipe off your face and refresh sunscreen.  Clean away dirt, sweat and grime that clog pores and can create uneven skin.  Lavender and Eucalyptus have great antibacterial properties which will help with any chin blemishes that you might get in the summer from your chin strap on your helmet.

- When you are done with wiping your face, stuff the wipe inside your riding helmet to keep that smelling fresh for your next ride!
- Wipe down your tack with the lavender wipes for a cleaning, moisturizing and anti-bacterial application.
- Wipe down your chin strap with the lavender or eucalyptus to get rid of the grime that’s collected there.  Not only do you need to keep your face clean, but also what touches your face to minimize blemishes.
- Use the lavender wipes on your horse’s face at a show to put the finishing touches before going into the show ring. If lavender has calming properties for humans, maybe it will benefit your horse as well?
- Use the lavender for yourself while warming up for the show ring.  Tend to feel a little bit nervous?  Wipe your face down, neck and wrists.  You will smell refreshed as well as benefit from that calming property lavender offers.  The essentials oils on the wipe will warm up with your skin.  Compete clean, calm cool and collected!
- Wipe down your show boots before going into the ring or after.
- Wipe down that dirty dog or smelly barn cat.
- Don’t throw away your wipes!  Well, unless after wiping down the dirty barn dog.  Use first on your face and body to refresh yourself and then leave the wipe in your car as an air freshener!   In the fall or winter, leave the already used wipe in your pocket to make your barn jacket smell good.
- After riding, always have one on hand for going from the barn to somewhere else.
- Mint has been said to help with spider control, so after using the mint wipe, wipe down somewhere in the tack room to keep the spiders down.
- The lemon and orange scents are great to wipe down the kitchen- they smell fantastic! Just like a freshly cut lemon or orange.  Wipe down your car or truck’s dashboard- It tends to collect more dust and dirt going to the barn and will leave a fresh smell in your vehicle.
What else can you think of?
