Australian Essentials

When traveling or living  in Australia here are your essentials:

Sunglasses or as they say in Australia: Sunnies

You can choose any style that you like.  Make sure you like your sunglasses and they give you a little bit of confidence.  If you’re not sure about the style, either bring a friend to try some on that you value their opinion or ask someone in the store that looks stylish.  Sometimes a stranger will suggest to you a great new style!

I’d suggest that you don’t buy super cheap ones as eye protection from the sun is very important, especially in Australia.

One suggestion is to check out Gidgee-Eyes for Equestrians.  They have four main styles to choose from, several color options, but most importantly they have been designed for the equestrian.  They are light, fit very well, fit under your helmet, have excellent UV protection, technical material for durability and have been tested and loved by many top competitors in all sorts of weather conditions and terrain.

Click picture to navigate to Gidgee-Eyes

What’s also nice is they come with a nice hard case, a soft case, and two lenses to interchange depending on light.

I’m digging the Enduro and Liberty Styles that Gidgee Eyes have to offer:

***Even when its a rainy day in Australia, don’t’ be caught without your sunnies.  The sun always comes out and you will need them!  Don’t’ leave home without them!

Another essential is footwear when you’re not riding: Thongs  or Pluggers (Flip flops)

SAVE OPTION: A favorite Australian brand of thongs is Havaianas- They pretty much come in any color or pattern imaginable!

Things to possibly consider- Do you want to add a pop of color with your footwear?  Or do you want your footwear to compliment colors you wear?

Decisions Decisions…. They are comfortable but are a regular pair of thongs that will last you, depending on your wear and tear, a year or two.

SPLURGE OPTION: If you are looking for a pair of Equestrian inspired sandals or thongs that will last you a life time and will look great with anything you wear, my suggestion is that you check out the amazing creations of Katharine Page!   My heart skips a beat when I think about her shoes!

I just love the equestrian tack inspired stitching found on all her items.

There are endless choices when it comes to non riding light footwear- just make sure you have at least one pair of thongs!

Last but not least, a hat is essential:

Your Australian classic hat of choice is an Akubra hat!  Its an Australian icon that has been producing  felt hats for over 130 years!  There are hundreds of styles to choose from, an equestrian classic is the Arena style.

Click picture to be directed to Akubra Hats

They also provide 70SPF sun protection!  Make sure you shape the hat a little or it will just look like you bought it- you gotta break them in a little.

Other equestrian choices- almost all equestrian clothing manufacture produces a fun cap to wear- Come colorful choices come from Ariat or Wrangler.

Don’t forget to also pack your sunscreen, have some clothing layers handy for sun protection, to change into after riding, and to add when the sea breeze comes in and cools things down quickly in the afternoon, depending on where you are.

STAY TUNED: More Australian essentials coming soon!

10 Item Wardrobe…

A full closet really is daunting.  It also makes getting dressed everyday even harder than it already is- Why would we want to do that to ourselves?  Life’s hard enough!

Here are some basics to do while we are changing seasons:

Some people might think this topic is superficial, but we all have to get dressed. If you put some thought and organization into this daily task, you can completely change your life.

STEP 1: TAKE OUT ALL THE CLOTHES.
Go through every single piece in your closet and ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Does this fit me?
  2. Is this age-appropriate?
  3. Is this my true style?
  4. Do I love this?
  5. Do I wear this?

If a piece doesn’t pass the test, get rid of it OR pass it down towards your riding/barn clothes.

***Don’t forget to go through your barn clothes afterwards and get rid of all the tatty stuff***

STEP 2: STORE THE CLOTHES THAT AREN’T SEASONALLY APPROPRIATE.
If you can’t wear that wool sweater or sundress this month, it’s visual clutter. Put off-season clothing out of sight.

STEP 3: PICK YOUR 10 ESSENTIAL ITEMS AND BUILD AROUND IT.

EVERYDAY LIFE:

1 Pair of slacks, 2 Pairs of jeans, 3 Dresses, 4 Blouses- Pick well made classic pieces that are natural coloured with a minimal pattern.  You can always dress these pieces up so easily with accessories- Scarves, jewelry, belts- Even a bright coloured lipstick can jazz things up.

BARN LIFE:

1 Vest, 1 Light jacket, 1 Heavy jacket, 2 well made riding breeches or jeans, 3 long sleeved layer pieces, 4 polos.   These are your everyday pieces that you always wear.

STEP 4: ADD THE EXTRAS.
Round out your wardrobe with t-shirts, sweaters, outerwear, special occasion wear, and accessories. These items don’t count towards your ten pieces.

This rule also goes towards your riding gear as well- downgraded jeans for the barn or riding in, have a pair or two of coloured riding breeches that are fun and less well made,  t-shirts, tanks, sweaters, etc…

STEP 5: OPTIONAL, BUT HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Colour block your closet when you put the clothes back in.  That way you can see how many purple, navy, green, pink, red, orange, blue items you have and pick accordingly to what colour you are looking for!  It really helps-

This should simplify your life.  Give you good building blocks to start with and then add from there.

Easy Accessory to transition into the new season…Pick up a Scarf!

Scarves are so easy to change things up with.

Fall & Jog-Out Ideas that get you through Winter

Keeping with this geometric, diamond pattern, contrasting colors that we’ve seen all year, I just saw this great skirt from Anthropologie, that would be perfect and easy to dress for jog-outs this fall.

It reminds me of Ralph Lauren’s Vintage collection a couple years ago- Do you recall?

Croptop Crackdown!

There has been a crackdown on crops!

No, not that crop, I’m talking about the very popular mid-drift fashion piece of clothing, the crop-top!

The Melbourne Cup is Australia‘s major thoroughbred horse race. Marketed as “the race that stops a nation”, it is a 3,200 metre race for three-year-olds and over. It is the richest “two-mile” handicap in the world, and one of the richest turf races. Conducted annually by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in MelbourneVictoria, the event starts at 3pm (daylight saving time) on the first Tuesday in November.

A crackdown, with fashion police stopping women who expose their stomachs will occur this coming November 4th on the Flemington Racecourse during The Melbourne Cup!

Women attending the Melbourne Cup Carnival can expect a crop top crackdown, with fashion police set to stop women with exposed stomachs from entering vast sections of the track.

Women entering general admission areas will be able to flash their flesh in midriff-exposing crop tops, but members and their guests trying to enter the Members’ Grandstand and enclosure, VIP Birdcage, and popular carpark picnic precincts, such as The Nursery, at Flemington in Victoria this year will be turned away.

They are already sick of the short skirts and high high heels, so they’ve drawn the line – No Crop Tops!

Do you think it’s fair?  Can a Crop Top be done tastefully?  Just a little sliver?

So if the crop top is out- Then what’s in?

Florals are a must!

Great heels that pop are always a must!

A fantastic fascinator!

My evaluation – Need a new coat? Which jacket could you get the most use out of?

Ok, so if you need a coat, but you can only afford one- Here’s my breakdown.
-Barbour makes a great trench that’s reversible.  It comes in a bone white, a coral color and a navy.  I would go with navy, personally. One the inside, theres a great tartan plaid that you can also wear. Stay dry and have two choices of looks!
- If you are looking for a true tweed- Timothy Foxx is my new favorite.  Incredible details, good price range and nice color choices.  As much as I love the longer “Catherine” Tweed Jacket in the Foxglove blue color, the Isla Jacket in the Duchess or Goosberry color is my pick for getting the most uses/bang for your buck.

The Isla Jacket in the middle.  You can wear it truely three seasons out of the year, even on cool evenings in the summer.  You can wear the jacket as a jacket, but also in and out of work, life, etc….  wear it as a blazer, wear it with jeans, skirts, dresses, shorts, slacks, etc… weat it with anything- the only struggle you will have is WHAT COLOR?
